Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Premature Mortality Magnified in Nation’s Capital
Violent deaths among blacks in the nation’s capital are a public health epidemic, with murder ranking as the leading cause of “years of potential life” lost for black men in D.C. (Years of potential life lost measures premature deaths against an average life expectancy of 70.) This study compares the rates of premature death from different causes among males and females, and among whites, blacks and Hispanics in D.C., as well as in the nation as a whole. The results? Blacks in D.C. lose more years of potential life than blacks in the U.S. as a whole. READ the full study ________________________ Our health care system is broken.
